GSL's Update

I hope everyone had a great summer - certainly it seems the Scouts & Explorers did. 40 Explorers and their leaders had a great 2 weeks in Kandestag Switzerland, 25 Scouts and Leaders from Eagle Troop completed an 80 mile cycle camp along the Normandy beaches of France and 20 Scouts and Leaders camped in Bristol and went caving and climbing at Cheddar.

Top Awards for Beavers and Scouts
We may only be 2 weeks into the new term, but already we have had 2 visits from Ian Stott the District Commissioner for Havant. The first was to Aspen Beavers to present the Chief Scout's Bronze Award to Curtis Chapman (left) and Daniel Byrne.

The next visit was to Eagle Troop to present the Chief Scout's Gold Award to Chris Hughes (left) and Jack Allison.

Young Leader Belt for Zack
Zack Allgood became the first Explorer on Hayling to be presented with the Young Leader belt. To complete this, Zack has been a regular helper with Redwood Beaver colony for 2 years and also completed the 11 young leader training modules which help develop leadership, planning, programme skills as well as First Aid.

Can You Help Us Please
In addition to the Leadership roles there are a number of other tasks that are needed to run a Scout Group. Many of these only require less than 10 hours a year, although some need a bit more.

We currently have a few gaps and would ask that you all consider whether you are able to help us.

Full details are available on our web site by selecting "Can You Help Us" from the left hand menu and I provide a summary below. if you think you may be able to help then please contact Ian Hawke who will provide more information before you make your final decision.

Book Sale Help - 2 hours, twice per year
Group Development team - 6 meetings a year, each of 2 hours.
Notice Board Management - 3 hours per year
Assistant Beaver Leader - 2 hours per week. Regular help on a Monday evening from 17:00 to 18:00.

Hayling Library Display
Look out for our display in the Hayling Library throughout October. Our thanks to Andrea Crossland for organising this.

Dreadnought Returns!
Dreadnought was originally the name of our Venture Scout Unit, which was disbanded in 2001 when Scouting changed the sections. However when we started the formation of our Scout Fellowship it was an easy decision to re-instate the name Dreadnought.

So what is a Scout Fellowship? A section for anyone over the age of 18 who wants to enjoy the fun of Scouting. Some members will be those who wish to retain their links to Scouting, others may be brand new to the movement but want to join the fun and support their local group.

You will receive more information on this section in the coming weeks. The first event is the organisation of our 80th Birthday party.
