GSL's Update

Lottery Award
We have just been notified that we have been successful in our application for an award under the "Awards for All" scheme.

We made the application in August to help with the set up costs of our new sections which included Books, general equipment, camping equipment and a one year cost of hiring the additional hall facility that we will need.

This will enable us to support an extra Beaver Colony, Cub Pack and Scout Troop that will be required during the next 12 months to meet the growing demand for Scouting on Hayling Island.

Top Award for Scouts

Congratulations to Calum Ferrier, Luke Rigden, Will Nelson and Max Jones from Eagle Troop on completing their Chief Scout's Gold Award, the top award of the Scout section. The awards were presented by Ian Stott, the Commissioner for Havant.

Thank you Hayling Lions
Thanks to the Lions Club of Hayling who have become the latest sponsors of a badge. As a community organisation, the committee decided to sponsor the Scout Community Challenge badge.

Jupiter Pack in Camp
24 Cubs from Jupiter Pack spent a weekend in camp recently. The weather was great and the activities included Archery, Rifle Shooting, Rafting, Whittling, baking, fire lighting plus other games.

The Rafting did prove to be a great challenge as the rafts seemed to have their own ideas of where to go!!

Redwood Sleepover
Archery, wigwams, model making, games, food, a camp fire sing-song but not much sleep was the order of the day for the Beavers of Redwood at their sleepover held at the HQ

Well done to the Beavers (and Leaders!) of Redwood for what proved to be a wild but enjoyable time for them all.

100 Club Results
Congratulations to Leslie Rowson, Malc Sprinks and Tracy Knight who each won £25 and to Mary Pike who won £50 in our September Draw.

New Team win Quiz
Well done to "Off the Island" for winning the Dreadnought Trophy at our Quiz Night. This year's event was organised by the Explorer Unit with the profits being used to purchase some of the specialist equipment they will need for their expedition to Switzerland in 2009.

The Explorers would like to thank all of the teams who entered, Billy Ault for setting the questions and to Mandy & Fiona who helped them with the food preparation.

Fun at our Parents Evening
24 parents of those who will join us this term took part in a special meeting recently. Following a chance to find out more about Scouting over a cup of tea, the parents were then subjected to three games and activities similar to those that our younger members take part in each week.

Thank you for joining in with such enthusiasm!

Harvest Festival
Thanks to those Beavers and Cubs who joined us at the St Andrew's Church Harvest Festival.

Ambulance Station host Saturn Pack
Saturn pack enjoyed a visit to the Ambulance Station in Portsmouth to find out more about how the station works and also to take a close look at an Ambulance.

The Latest Great Escape
20 Scouts from Hayling joined with others recently to take part in the Great Escape, a team challenge organised by Haying's leaders. The Great Escape requires the teams to navigate around a course of about 10 miles using a map and compass and complete various challenges en route. The challenges required a mix of skill, physical strength, initiative and teamwork. The event ended in the early hours of the morning and after a quick sleep at a local campsite the participants finished with a hearty breakfast.

Fireworks Display
Our annual fireworks display will take place on Friday 7th November. Details of location and times to be sent later but please make a note in your diaries.

One Wheel on my Wagon

Trek Cart

For their personal challenge section of the Chief Scout's Gold Award Will, Luke, Calum and Max decided to complete the 15 mile Round Langstone Walk, with Trek Cart in under 4.5 hours.

What they did not plan for was one wheel falling off about 1 mile from the end. However in true Scouting fashion they completed the walk with a smile and in a time of 4hrs 37 mins.
