GSL's Update

Top Awards
Congratulations to Dominic Allgood, Matthew Compton, Jack Kinsella and Alexander Wellbelove of Redwood Colony, who all received their Chief Scout's Bronze Award, for the Beaver section. The photograph below shows Alexander, Jack and Dominic with Nigel Valette the District Commissioner for Havant and the one at the bottom is of Matthew, taken at a different time.

And just a few days later!
Nigel Valette then joined Cubs from both packs for the closing ceremony of their joint camp on Hayling to present the Chief Scout's Silver Award to Alex Kinsella and Hywel Brace of Jupiter Pack.

100 Club
Congratulations to the winners of the October Draw of our 100 Club. They are Karen Wells, Sandra Haines and Kate Goddard. Your prizes of £25 are on their way.

New Team win Quiz
Many thanks to everyone who joined in our annual quiz night for the Dreadnought Trophy. 18 teams took part this year and the winners were a new team "The Keen Team", who beat the previous holders "ACE" in a tie break after each team scored 77 points (out of a possible 90). Hugger Muggers Inc were placed 3rd with 76 points. Well done to Mandy, Fiona, Jo and Andrew for the food and thanks to our Explorers for their work before and after the quiz.

Cubs play at Pirates in Camp
The camping season never ends and last month 40 Cubs from both Jupiter and Saturn Packs spent the weekend in camp with a "Pirates" theme. Activities included Raft Building, Archery (not sure if Pirates played with Bows and Arrows though!) and some classic games of "Walking the Plank", "finding the treasure" and getting wet.

Thanks Hayling Show
Last month I reported how we helped at the Hayling Show. Well we had the nice surprise of a donation as a thank you for the efforts of the Scouts and Explorers. Thank You!

100 Club Renewal
We are just about to start the renewal of our 100 Club members for 2008. If you are not already members then why not join us for a chance to win one of 41 prizes throughout the year.

Scouts hold a Circus Skills evening
Anyone wandering around Northwood Farm recently might have been amazed to see a Marquee pitched, lights blazing and a tight rope stretched between 2 cars. This was just one of the skills on offer during Eagle Troop's Circus Skills evening which also included various forms of Juggling, Stilts and no doubt some clowning around!

Beavers learn First Aid
Beavers from Redwood Colony have just completed basic Emergency Response training.
So, when in need, look for a Beaver!

Harvest Festival
Thanks for those Beavers, Cubs and Parents who joined us for this year's service.

Scouts learn Survival Skills
6 Scouts from Lion Troop spent a weekend learning to survive in the wild without a tent or cooking equipment. They built a shelter from natural materials to sleep in and also learnt how to skin a rabbit and live off the fruits of the land!

Thanks to Hayling Island Businessmen's Club
This week I received a letter from the Club with a donation towards our 2008 activities. I would personally like to thank the committee of HIBC for choosing us to receive this donation and also for their kind words in supporting our work.

Explorers on Expedition

By the time you receive this edition of "The Woggle" 5 of our Explorers will have completed their 2 day, 15 mile Expedition towards their Chief Scout's Platinum and Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards.

2008 and a Gang Show

At a recent Leaders meeting we decided to put our acting skills to the test and put on a Gang Show in 2008. The main objective is to let every member of the Group take part in sketches, songs, or if they prefer, to be part of the back stage crew. We are only just starting to work on the details but as with our previous shows we plan on 3 performances over a Friday evening and Saturday. Watch out for more details.

Centenary Growth
One of the impacts of our centenary year is that we have seen an increase in young people wanting to join Scouts. I am now receiving regular additions to our waiting list. This is good for our future!

Other Letters

Over the next couple of weeks, every parent should be receiving separate flyers about our Wine Tasting evening, our Fireworks evening and the 100 Club. If you do not receive these please ask your leader.

Hayling Islander Supports Hayling Scouts
The observant readers of the Hayling Islander may have noticed the advert on page 16 about the Island Calendar. If you read the details you will see that the Islander has chosen the 3rd Hayling Scout Group to be this year's recipients of their annual sponsorship. £1 of every calendar purchased will be donated towards our 2008 activities so why not purchase a copy of this attractive and useful calendar and help us at the same time.

Thank You, Hayling Islander for both your financial support and for endorsing our aims and objectives for the young people of Hayling Island.
