GSL Update

I hope you all had a good summer and found time to relax and enjoy the brilliant weather and of course the cricket.

After 14 years of the “Third Hayling News” we have decided to change the name. Our monthly newsletter will now be known simply as “The Woggle  (Thanks Val!). We have changed the name in keeping with our recent activity on the Web Site and our attempt to improve on the information provided to our sections, our parents and our friends.

Camps & Expeditions

During the holiday period over 60 members of the Troops and Explorer Unit spent at least a week in Camp, others completed practice expeditions in the New Forest and in Wales for their awards and together they spent more than 500 nights under canvas – not bad for a period of 1 month.

This also meant that we made extensive use of our equipment.

When you are next in the HQ look at some of the pictures on the walls and soon we hope to have some on our website. (See later).

7th Best Patrol in Hampshire

Many congratulations to Cobra Patrol of Lion Troop  (Joel Knight Patrol Leader, Alastair Harris, Robert Hawley, Ben Dimment and Jake Whistlecraft  on proving themselves to be the 7th best camping patrol in Hampshire (out of about 1200 patrols) at the County Camping Competition recently. Throughout the weekend they were monitored and marked on their ability to look after themselves with both food and activity, their ability to work as a team, the leadership of Joel and of course their scouting skills.

They also came 4th in a special competition to build a swing.

Raise the Roof

We are getting there! We have now banked over £21000 towards our target of about £35000

During August we enjoyed a great day at the Carnival and raised £277 with our Crockery Smash, raised another £80 at the Maypole Inn charity day with our coconut shy.

We have been in contact with almost every Island Business and have received support from some of these and have continued to receive significant financial support from the many “Friends of Hayling Scouts”.

We are still in contact with other organisations and with the Quiz night approaching and also our 150 club we all feel that we are entering the final straight and remain optimistic that we will see our new roof this year.

Many thanks to those of you who now pay your subs by standing order. This really does make a difference to our Leaders and those parent volunteers who collect the subs.

It is never too late to join so if you wish to start paying in this way and avoid that start of term rush, pick up a form from the HQ and return it to me.
