Day out at Windsor for Explorers

Report Date 02/05/11

You will recall that in December, Michael Kenny, Barnabas Pycroft and Jake Whistlecraft were presented with the Chief Scout's Commendation for Meritorious Conduct for saving an individual from the Hayling mud flats alongside the Billy Line, earlier in 2010.

As recipients of this very prestigious award the 3 Explorers were invited to the annual parade of Queen's Scouts held at Windsor Castle. The day consisted of a special Service in St George's Chapel Windsor followed by a gathering in the courtyard of Windsor Castle for those who have received special Scouting Awards where they had the opportunity to meet our Chief Scout Bear Grylls and then witness the parade of over 200 Queen Scout Award holders.

Waiting for the next event!

I think I can say that we all had a fantastic day out and I know that Michele, Arron and I were very very proud parents. It was a wonderfully sunny day and any disappointment about the lack of a member of the royal family was off set by the effort the Chief Scout put into speaking to everyone and generally taking a lot of time with all concerned. It was wonderful to see so many scouts in the streets of Windsor and to see 200 Queen Scouts marching past was a wonderful sight - so much achievement and dedication. The National Scout Service was also special but to walk through the choir of St Georges Chapel was a moment I will never forget

For me being marched down by Coldstream Guards in full tilt boogey mode, and walking out of Windsor Castle to the massed ranks of cheering crowds and photographing tourists were memorable and very English highlights.  I too was very impressed with Bear and his attention to individuals, but also most impressed with Jake, Mike and Barney and the way in which they just took to their special status without any hesitation! Quite right too!
